At Tait Heritage Farms, we believe in being transparent about how we raise our animals, and why.
If you've spent any time shopping for meat, you've probably seen terms like grass-fed, grain-fed, pasture-raised, free-range and natural. different animals have different nutritional needs. So we'd like to explain why we do what we do - even though it costs us a lot of money.
Our pigs are paddock raised and grain fed.
unfortunately, pasture alone doesn't provide everything a growing pig needs.
Unlike cattle, pigs aren't designed to live on grass. Grains have always been a natural part of a pig's diet, even in the wild.
To make sure our pigs stay healthy and grow properly, we feed them a professionally balanced grain ration. It supplies the protein, energy, vitamins and minerals they need for proper growth, strong bones, healthy immune systems and excellent meat quality.
Why not grass-fed pork?
seems like it would work? The truth is, pigs simply aren't built to thrive on grass alone.
Grass is an excellent enrichment for pigs. ours happily root the grass up in their paddock every day! grass just doesn't contain enough digestible energy or the right balance of nutrients to support healthy growth.
That's why we chose a balanced grain ration alongside outdoor access.
